The Cards

Lagim – meaning dread, terror, or gloom in Filipino – is a survival card game of strategy and luck. Set in the early 17th century Philippines, players must battle dark forest creatures – and each other – to outlast the forces of evil and save the human race.

The Lagim Deck of Cards

 

The fearsome monsters, creatures, and beings that terrorize the realm of the living. The word “Lagim” means “dread”, “terror”, or “gloom” in Filipino.

Lagim cards are offensive cards that are used to attack players, and they cannot be used to defend. Lagim cards can be obtained by casting a Dark Soul Coin, or by capturing them from the Lagim deck. All Lagim cards are uniquely aligned to a certain phase of the moon.

Mambabarang (Hex-bringer)

Entity Level: V (5)
Archetype: Witch
Ability: Soulreaper – Automatically claim 1 soul from the opponent
Traits: Hailing from a highborn bloodline of witches, the evil Mambabarang uses insects as a medium to torture, kill, or inflict hexes upon their victims.
Combinations: Altar ng Kulam, Alakdan at Alupihan, Sumpa ng Manika

Mangkukulam (Witch/Warlock)

Entity Level: V (5)
Archetype: Witch
Ability: Soulreaper – Automatically claim 1 soul from the opponent.
Traits: This vengeful Mangkukulam uses black magic to cast curses and is known to hex victims using a voodoo doll, needles, and a strand of the victim’s hair.
Combinations: Altar ng Kulam, Alakdan at Alupihan, Sumpa ng Manika

Aswang (Ghoul)

Entity Level: IV (4)
Archetype: Ghoul
Ability: Impale – Reduces the opponent’s entity-level by 1.
Traits: This beguiling shape-shifter feasts on both animal and human flesh and blood. It can roam freely in daylight but is more powerful in the darkness.
Combinations: Tiktik at Buwan, Dugo at langis

Mananaggal (Viscera Sucker)

Entity Level: IV (4)
Archetype: Ghoul
Ability: Impale – Reduces the opponent’s entity-level by 1.
Traits: Disguised during the day, at night it detaches its torso and sprouts bat-like wings to hunt. It commonly feeds on the unborn babies of pregnant women.
Combinations: Tiktik at Buwan, Dugo at langis

Kapre (Tree-Dweller)

Entity Level: III (3)
Archetype: Giant
Ability: Silence – Opponent’s Amihan card is disabled for the turn and cannot be used to defend.
Traits: Beastly cigar-smoking giants inhabiting large trees, the peculiar Kapres are mischievous to children and are easily smitten with youthful maidens

Tikbalang (Werehorse)

Entity Level: III (3)
Archetype: Giant
Ability: Silence – Opponent’s Amihan card is disabled for the turn and cannot be used to defend.
Traits: A sly’s beast with the head and legs of a horse and the torso of a man. The Tikbalang is notorious for deceiving humans and leading travelers astray.

Bungisngis (Cyclops)

Entity Level: III (3)
Archetype: Giant
Ability: Silence – Opponent’s Amihan card is disabled for the turn and cannot be used to defend.
Traits: A one-eyed giant that is always smiling, showing its monstrous teeth. It has a voracious appetite for animal meat and uses its superb hearing to hunt.

Duwende (Hobgoblin)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Dwarf
Ability: Stun – Select and disable a random card from the opponent’s hand. Selected card is disabled for the turn and placed face down on the play area.
Traits: Tiny, human-like beings that reside both in forests and in human dwellings, Duwendes are spiteful and bestow illness and misfortune when offended.
Combinations: Bungo at Tungkod

Nuno sa Punso (Goblin of the mound)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Dwarf
Ability: Stun – Select and disable a random card from the opponent’s hand. Selected card is disabled for the turn and placed face down on the play area.
Traits: An elder creature that lives underground in mounds, it is sinister and invokes tragedy upon those who would dare intrude upon its dwelling

The Baryo Deck of Cards

Albularyo (Shaman)

Entity Level: V (5)
Archetype: Medium
Ability: Dissolve – After a successful defense, select and keep 1 random card from the opponent’s hand. If it is a Lagim card, discard it to the Graveyard.
Traits: The Albularyo comes from an old and noble clan of healers whose traditional healing arts are known to cure even the most supernatural ailments
Combinations: Buntot at Pagi, Orasyon at insenso, Agimat, Gasera

Esperitista (Invoker)

Entity Level: V (5)
Archetype: Medium
Ability: Predict – After a successful defense, the player may choose to guess 1 the card in the opponent’s hand.

–  If correct: Discard a selected card. Claim 1 Soul from the opponent. If incorrect: Pay 1 Soul to the opponent.

Traits: The Espiritista is a warden of faith, invoking spirits and divine powers to heal the sick, cast out evil, and perform miraculous deeds.
Combinations: Buntot at Pagi, Orasyon at insenso, Agimat, Gasera

Amihan (Lightbringer)

Entity Level: III (3)
Archetype: Mortal
Ability: Summon – After a successful defense, sacrifice any 1 Hiwaga card from hand to the Graveyard to summon a Giant card from the Lagim deck.
Traits: Fair and gentle lady of the Barrio, Amihan’s radiant beauty is known far and wide; alluring all, from the noblest of men to even the most hideous of giants.
Combinations: Tabak, Bawang at Asin, Sibat Sulo, Agimat, Gasera

Dante (Woodsman)

Entity Level: III (3)
Archetype: Mortal
Ability: Boost – When played with Amihan, Dante’s Entity Level increase by 2.
Traits: A young man known for his courage and devotion, Dante has sworn to use his strength and skill to defeat the vicious entities of Lagim forest.
Combinations: Tabak, Bawang at Asin, Sibat Sulo, Agimat, Gasera

Tabak, Bawang, At Asin (Blade, Garlic, & Salt)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Mortals
Ability: All opponent’s abilities are nullified and do not take effect. – Can only be played with Dante or Amihan.
Artifact: It is said that these items can be used to ward off or attack evil creatures like the Aswangs.

Sibat at Sulo (Spear & Torch)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Mortals
Ability: All opponent’s abilities are nullified and do not take effect. – Can only be played with Dante or Amihan.
Artifact: “By this torch, I can see in the darkness. By this spear, I can cut through the night”

Buntot Pagi (Stingray Tail)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Mediums
Ability: All opponent’s abilities are nullified and do not take effect. – Can only be played with the Espiritista or Albularyo
Artifact: The stingray tail is an effective talisman and fine weapon against certain evil beings.

Orasyon at Insenso (Prayer & Incense)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Mediums
Ability: All opponent’s abilities are nullified and do not take effect. – Can only be played with Espiritista or Albularyo.
Artifact: The prayer of the faithful will be heard, and divine protection will be bestowed upon those who believe.

Agimat (Amulet)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Mortals/Mediums
Ability: All opponent’s abilities are nullified and do not take effect. – The Agimat can be played by itself when defending.
Artifact: A rare charm of mystical power that protects the bearer from evil curses and sinister sorcery. It feels remarkably reassuring, and warm to touch.

Gasera (Gas Lamp)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Mortals/Mediums
Ability: View the top 2 cards from the Lagim deck and choose which one to engage in battle or use for the attack.
Artifact: The lamp bathes you in warm light, illuminating the path through the dark forest.

Altar ng Kulam (Witch Altar)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Witch
Ability: Place on an opponent’s Barrio, then sacrifice any 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard to summon a Witch card from the Lagim deck to attack. – When played with Witch card + Sumpa ng Manika, the player is able to attack 2 Barrios at once.
Artifact: An altar of malevolent magic, upon which infernal sacrifices are made.

Alakdan at Alupihan (Scorpion & Centipede)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Witch
Ability: Reduces opponent’s Entity Level by 3. – Can only be played with a Witch card.
Artifact: Vicious predators that poison their prey with incredibly toxic venom; each one a fitting medium for unspeakable witchcraft.

Sumpa ng Manika (Voodoo Doll)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Witch
Ability: When played with a Witch card, take 1 random Lagim card from the opponent’s hand and immediately add to the attack. – If played with a Witch card+ Altar ng Kulam, the player can attack 2 Barrios at once.
Artifact: The lamp bathes you in warm light, illuminating the path through the dark forest.

Puno ng Acacia (Acacia Tree)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Giant
Ability: Entity Level is increased by 1. – Can only be played with a Giant card.
Artifact: A strong, creepy, gigantic tree to shelter strong, gigantic beings.

Tiktik at Buwan (Black Crow & Full Moon)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Ghoul
Ability: Place 2 Tiktik at Buwan cards on an opponent’s Barrio to summon a Ghoul card from the Lagim deck to attack.
Artifact: The black crow caws forebodingly against the night sky, and the clouds part to reveal the full moon. A bad omen.

Dugo at Langis (Blood & Oil)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Ghoul
Ability: Reduces opponent’s Entity Level by 1. – Can be played with a Ghoul card.
Artifact: Implements of a wicked transfiguration. The odor is thick and pungent, like clotted, infected wounds.

Bungo at Tungkod (Skull & Staff)

Entity Level: II (2)
Archetype: Dwarf
Ability: Entity Level is increased by 1. – Can only be played with a Dwarf card.
Artifact: Instruments of magic utilized by elder beings to channel their dark energies. Aged and sturdy.
